Davao del Norte

Province of southeast Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 8,130 sq km/ 3,139 sq mi; population (1995) 1,558,000. The capital is Tagum. The region is very mountainous. The economy is heavily dependent on plantation agriculture, producing hemp, coconuts, and coffee. Timber is important in the mountains, and gold, copper, coal (near Mayo River), and sulphur (at Mount Apo) are mined. Also important are pearls and fishing. There are tourist resorts on the coast.
