Davenport

City in southeastern Iowa, USA, 106 km/66 mi south of Dubuque, directly across from Rock Island, Illinois, on the Mississippi River; seat of Scott County; population (2000) 98,400. It forms the ‘Quad Cities’ metropolitan area with Bettendorf, also in Iowa, and Rock Island and Moline in Illinois. Davenport is the commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural region; industries include aluminium, agriculture, and machinery parts.

The community was first settled in 1808, and laid out in 1836; it was incorporated as a city in 1851. Davenport has been the seat of Scott County since 1838. It was the site of the first railway bridge across the Mississippi River, built in 1856.

Davenport is the seat of several colleges including Saint Ambrose University (1882), Palmer College of Chiropractic (1895), and Marycrest International University. Attractions include the Putnam Museum of science and natural history. ‘Buffalo Bill’, William Cody, scout and performer, was from Davenport. His homestead is in nearby Princeton and there is a museum in nearby Le Claire.
