Davis, David (1815–1886)

US Supreme Court justice. He served as a circuit court judge in Illinois (1848–62), until Abraham Lincoln made him the US Supreme Court justice (1862–77). A presidential hopeful in 1872, he stepped down from the court to be a Democratic Senator (1876–83).

He was born in Cecil County, Maryland and was a close friend of President Lincoln.
