Dundas, David (1735–1820)

Scottish general and writer on military tactics. His Rules and Regulations for the Formation, Field Exercises and Movements of His Majesty's Forces 1792 were published as the official orders for the army.

He also wrote Rules and Regulations for the Cavalry 1792. John Moore and the Duke of Wellington fought their battles according the rules laid down in these works.

Dundas entered the army in 1752 and was aide-de-camp to General George Eliott 1760–61 in the campaigns in Germany. Every year of the Seven Years' War he was present at the manoeuvres of the French, Prussian, and Austrian armies, and in 1788 published the results of his observations of their tactics in The Principles of Military Movements, Chiefly Applicable to Infantry. He was made governor of Chelsea Hospital in 1804, and commander-in-chief of the army 1809–11.
