Davies, Howard (1945– )

English stage director. Associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) from 1975, his work included a cool, Brechtian Macbeth (1982), Henry VIII (1983), and Troilus and Cressida (1985), which he set during the Crimean War. He also established and ran the Warehouse, the RSC's London studio theatre, 1977–82. In 1988 he became an associate director of the National Theatre.

His first operatic production was Idomeneo in 1991 for the Welsh National Opera. Later productions include Mary Stuart (1996) and The Iceman Cometh (1998).

Davies was born in Reading, Berkshire. After taking a director's course at Bristol University, his first appointment as associate director was with the Bristol Old Vic.
