Davies, Ryland (1943– )

Welsh tenor. He sang Paris in the British premiere of Gluck's Paride ed Elena while still at the Royal Manchester College of Music (1963) and made his professional debut as Almaviva with the Welsh National Opera in 1964. In 1968 he sang Belmonte at Glyndebourne, and in 1969 he appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Hylas in the first complete performance of Les Troyens in French. He made his US debut in 1970, in San Francisco, and appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1975 as Mozart's Ferrando. Other roles include Fenton, Ottavio, and Lensky. He sang at Glyndebourne 1989–90, as Britten's Lysander and as Janáček's Tichon.
