Davis, Dwight Filley (1879-1945)

US public official and sportsman. The US national tennis doubles champion (1899-1901), he donated the Davis Cup. After military service in World War I, he held important political posts and, as governor general of the Philippines (1929-32), introduced various educational and economic reforms.

He was born into a wealthy family in St Louis, Missouri and attended Harvard. He was active in St Louis local government until World War I when he volunteered for military service. He was assistant secretary of war (1923-25) and the secretary of war (1925-29). A trustee of the Brookings Institution from the time of its foundation in 1927, he served as its chairman (1937-45).
