Davis, Benjamin Oliver, Sr (1887-1970)

US soldier. He served as a lieutenant in the Spanish-American army, and enlisted in the regular army 1899. Commissioned in 1901, he became the first black US general when promoted to brigadier general 1940. At that time, his son, Benjamin O Davis Jr, was the only other black regular officer in the US forces. He contributed to preparations for the desegregation of the US military in 1947.
