Davout, Louis Nicolas, duc d'Auerstädt, Prince of Eckmühl

    0.01 sec.

Davout, Louis Nicolas, duc d'Auerstädt, Prince of Eckmühl (1770-1823)

Marshal of France, one of Napoleon's most brilliant generals. He fought under Napoleon in Egypt 1798-99, at Austerlitz in 1805, Auerstädt in 1806 (when he defeated the main Prussian army with a single corps), and Eckmühl and Wagram in 1809. He was a despotic governor of Poland (appointed in 1807), commanded the 1st Corps in the Russian campaign 1812-13, and sustained the siege of Hamburg in 1813. After Napoleon's return from Elba, he became minister of war, and was left in command of Paris after Waterloo.

After the Bourbon restoration he was deprived of all his titles, but they were restored to him in 1817.
