Dawson Creek

Town in Peace River Regional District, northeast British Columbia, Canada; population (1991) 11,000. It is situated in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, on Dawson Creek, near the Alberta border, 267 km/166 mi northeast of Prince George. It is the southeastern terminus of the Alaska Highway. Dawson Creek was laid out in 1919, and grew after the completion of the highway during World War II. Industries include oil refining, trucking, lumber, livestock, and grains. The highway brings tourism, and hydroelectric projects on the Peace River have also contributed to the regional economy.
