Dayan, Moshe (1915-1981)

Israeli general and politician. As minister of defence 1967 and 1969-74, he was largely responsible for the victory over neighbouring Arab states in the 1967 Six-Day War, but he was criticized for Israel's alleged unpreparedness in the 1973 October War and resigned along with Prime Minister Golda Meir.

He returned to office, as foreign minister in 1977, but resigned two years later in protest over the refusal of the Begin government to negotiate with the Palestinians.
