De Havilland, Olivia Mary (1916– )

US actor. She played challenging dramatic roles in Gone With the Wind (1939), To Each His Own (1946) for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress, Dark Mirror (1946), and The Snake Pit (1948).

She was a star in Hollywood from the age of 19, when she appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935). She won her second Academy Award for The Heiress (1949), and played in Lady in a Cage (1964) and Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Other film appearances include The Adventurers (1970) and The Fifth Musketeer (1979). Her work for television includes roles in Roots: The Next Generations (1979), Murder is Easy (1982), Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna (1986), and The Woman He Loved (1988).

She is the sister of the actor Joan Fontaine.
