De Kalb

Town in De Kalb County, north-central Illinois; population (1990) 34,900. It is located on the south branch of the Kishwaukee River, 48 km/30 mi southeast of Rockford. Barbed wire was perfected and first manufactured here. Today, local manufactures include wire and cable, fencing, truck bodies, asphalt paving equipment, and appliance motors. Hybrid seed corn and chickens are processed, and truck gardening is important in the area.

Founded in 1838 as Buena Vista, De Kalb is also the location of Northern Illinois University (1895). The American Farm Bureau was founded here in 1912.
