De Land

Town and administrative headquarters of Volusia County, northeast Florida; population (1990) 16,500. It is situated 32 km/20 mi southwest of Daytona Beach. Founded in 1876, it was the site, during the 1880s, of Chinese immigrant Lue Gim Gong's development of important strains of oranges and grapefruit. These and other fruits are grown nearby, and De Land serves as a packing and shipping centre. The city also has lumber mills, and manufactures electrical and electronic parts, medical equipment, and clothing. It is now a popular winter resort. It is home to Stetson University (1883).
