De Long, George Washington

De Long, George Washington (1844–1881)

US naval officer and explorer. He commanded the Jeanette during an attempt to reach the North Pole via the Bering Strait (1879–81). He died on the Siberian coast after his ship was crushed and sank.

He was born in New York City. He joined the navy in 1865 and became interested in Arctic exploration.
