De Main, John (1944- )

American conductor. He studied at Juilliard and was assistant conductor of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra 1972-74 and musical director of the Texas Opera Theater 1974-76. He led Opera Omaha 1983-91, and the Houston Grand Opera 1979-93, where he conducted the premieres of Bernstein's A Quiet Place (1983), Adams' Nixon in China (1987) and Tippett's New Year (1989). He led the first local performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at Houston in 1993.
