De Sica, Vittorio (1901-1974)

Italian film director and actor. His Ladri di biciclette/Bicycle Thieves (1949) is a landmark of Italian neo-realism. Later films include Umberto D (1955), La ciociara/Two Women (1961), and Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini/The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970).

His acting credits include The Earrings of Madame de .. (1953) and The Millionaires (1960).

He won four Academy Awards for best foreign film with Sciuscià/Shoeshine (1946), Ladri di biciclette, Ieri, oggi, domani/Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (1964), and Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini.
