De Smet

Town and administrative headquarters of Kingsbury County, east South Dakota; population (1990) 1,200. It is located 58 km/36 mi west of Brookings. Founded when the railroad reached this area in 1880, it is situated in a dairying region and named for a Jesuit missionary, whose statue stands in a park here.

De Smet was the home of writer Laura Ingalls Wilder, who based some of her Little House on the Prairie books on the town. The Ingalls home is preserved, and a yearly pageant is based on her tales.
