De Witt, Cornelius (1623–1672)

Dutch burgomaster. He was the brother of Jan De Witt, whose republican policy he supported. After the French invasion of 1672, he was arrested on a false charge of conspiring to poison Prince William of Orange. He was murdered by the crowd on his release from prison.
