degaussing

Removal of magnetism from a device. The term is usually used in reference to colour monitors and other display devices that use a cathode-ray tube (CRT). External magnetic forces, such as the Earth's natural magnetism or a magnet placed close to the monitor, can cause distorted images and colours.

In World War II, ships were degaussed to prevent them from detonating magnetic mines. This involved encircling each ship with a conductor, through which an electric current was maintained.

Most monitors automatically degauss the CRT whenever they are switched on. In addition, many monitors have a manual degauss button that performs a more thorough degaussing of the CRT.
