Dean, Winton (Basil) (1916– )

English writer on music, son of the producer Basil Dean. He was educated at Harrow and at King's College, Cambridge; he read classics and English, but studied music privately, translating choruses, etc., from Aristophanes' Frogs for Walter Leigh and from Weber's Abu Hassan. His books include Bizet (published in 1948, and revised in 1965), Handel's Dramatic Oratorios (published in 1959) and Handel's Operas, 1704–1726 (published in 1987), and Essays on Opera (publisded in 1990).
