DebrecenSecond-largest city in Hungary, 193 km/120 mi east of Budapest, in the Great Plain (Alföld) region; population (2001) 211,000. It produces tobacco, agricultural machinery, and pharmaceuticals. Lajos Kossuth declared Hungary independent of the Habsburgs here 1849. It is a commercial centre and has a university founded 1912.
