debridement

Removal of dead or contaminated tissue from a wound to prevent infection, and, in the treatment of burns, where a skin graft is to be made.

Dead tissue is carved away by a scalpel till the wound bleeds heavily, to ensure the patient's blood supply will reach the graft. In some cases, other methods can be used, for example mechanical and laser debridement.
