Decius, Gaius Messius Quintus Traianus (c. AD 201-251)

Roman emperor from 249, born in Lower Pannonia. He was sent by the emperor Philip I ‘ the Arabian’ to put down a rising of the Moesian army, and was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers against his will. He was persuaded to march on Italy and near Verona met and defeated Philip, who was killed. He fought a number of campaigns against the Goths but was finally beaten and killed by them near Abrittus. He ruthlessly persecuted the Christians.
