Declaration of Rights

In Britain, the statement issued by the Convention Parliament in February 1689, laying down the conditions under which the crown was to be offered to William III and Mary. Its clauses were later incorporated in the Bill of Rights.

A new biography by Jeff Broadwater reminds us that, in May of 1776, Mason was the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which begins: "All men are born equally free and independent and have certain inherent natural Rights .
[right arrow] The Bill of Rights is based in part on the Virginia Declaration of Rights, written by George Mason in 1776, the English Bill of Rights and England's Magna Carta, and France's Declaration of the Rights of Man.
The Virginian helped frame the Constitution but refused to sign it because of several concerns, first and foremost the absence of a declaration of rights.
