Decorah

Town and administrative headquarters of Winneshiek County, northeast Iowa; population (2000) 8,200. It is situated on the Upper Iowa River, 101 km/63 mi northeast of Waterloo and 24 km/15 mi south of the Minnesota border. Settled by Norwegians in 1849, it is a processing and shipping centre for grain, dairy cattle, hogs, and poultry. There is also a variety of light industries. Nearby are limestone quarries and fish hatcheries. A county seat since 1851, the present courthouse (1904) is the second.

It is home to Luther College (1861) and the Vesterheim/Norwegian-American Museum. A Nordic Fest is held every July. Fort Atkinson State Park is 21 km/13 mi to the southwest.
