Dedham

Village in Essex, England, on the River Stour; population (2001, Dedham and Langham) 2,900. The village is in the Vale of Dedham, which was the subject of many paintings by the 19th-century landscape painter John Constable. Dedham was once a centre of the Flemish cloth trade.

Dedham

Town and administrative headquarters of Norfolk County, east Massachusetts; population (1990) 23,800. It is situated on the Neponset and Charles rivers, 13 km/8 mi southwest of Boston, of which it is a residential suburb, with several commercial strips and some light manufacturing. Founded in 1635 and incorporated the following year, it is one of the oldest inland settlements of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Fairbanks House, one of three entries in Dedham on the national register of historic places, is believed to be the oldest (1636) existing frame dwelling in the USA. Industry began in Dedham in 1639 when water was used to power mills. It became the seat for Norfolk County in 1796.

The Sacco-Vanzetti murder trial took place here in 1921.
