Deep Blue

Name given to the IBM chess-playing computer that first defeated a human grandmaster, the Russian Garry Kasparov, in 1996. This was the first match of a six-match series that Kasparov went on to win 4-2, but in 1997 Deep Blue won a rematch series 3.5-2.5, fuelling debate about the possibilities of artificial intelligence.

The architect and principal designer of Deep Blue was Feng-Hsiung Hsu, who joined IBM in 1989. Deep Blue's award-winning precursor, Deep Thought, was developed by Hsu and other graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In 1988 it was the first computer to achieve a grandmaster rating.

Always dressed in white, she seemed to move like a shadow through all sorts of places, without contracting spot or stain; and there was not a corner or nook, above or below, where those fairy footsteps had not glided, and that visionary golden head, with its deep blue eyes, fleeted along.
Vivid orchids and wonderful colored lichens smoldered upon the swarthy tree-trunks and where a wandering shaft of light fell full upon the golden allamanda, the scarlet star-clusters of the tacsonia, or the rich deep blue of ipomaea, the effect was as a dream of fairyland.
