Degoutte, Jean Marie Joseph (1866–1938)

French general in World War I. In June 1918 he commanded the 6th Army at the Battle of Chateau-Thierry and at the second Battle of the Marne, and played an important part in the liberation of Belgium.

Degoutte entered the French army as a volunteer, and was commissioned into the 4th Zouaves 1890. After extensive service in the French colonies during 1914, he became Chief of Staff of the 4th Army Corps. Promoted to brigadier-general March 1916, he commanded the Moroccan Division and became general of division March 1918. He became commander-in-chief of the Allied Armies of Occupation in Germany 1920.
