Deineka, Alexander Alexandrovich (1899–1969)

Russian painter, designer, and illustrator. He was one of the first generation of Soviet artists. His subjects were contemporary events, as in his Defence of Petrograd 1928. He studied in the Kharkov Art School and the Moscow Art and Technical Workshops 1921–25, and from the late 1920s was an influential teacher in Moscow.
