Deir-es-Zor

City in eastern Syria, 290 km/180 mi southeast of Aleppo; population (1992) 125,000. It is situated on the River Euphrates, and is an important intersection on the Aleppo–Baghdad and Damascus–Mosul routes. Deir-es-Zor is the largest city in the area, and its main industries are cotton and oil.
