Del Mar

Town in San Diego County, southwest California; population (1990) 4,900. It is situated on the Pacific Ocean, 27 km/17 mi north-northwest of San Diego city centre. Solana Beach is to the north, and the Torrey Pines to the south. An affluent resort, it is noted for its beaches and for the Del Mar Racetrack, at the county fairgrounds, a horse facility frequented since the 1930s by Hollywood stars and other celebrities.
