Delano

Town in Kern County, south-central California; population (1990) 22,800. It is located 48 km/30 mi north-northwest of Bakersfield, in the San Joaquin Valley. It is a trade centre for an area noted for the production of table grapes and wine; cotton and potatoes are also raised in the region, and there is some light industry. Delano is widely known as the birthplace of the United Farm Workers, first organized here in 1962 by Cesar Chavez.
