Deller, Jeremy (1966– )| English artist. Known for his cultural and political themes, focusing on the fringes of society and their untold stories, he often enlists large numbers of people to collaborate on a variety of media. He won the UK's Turner Prize in 2005 for his documentary Memory Bucket (2003), looking at the US state of Texas with particular focus on the 1993 Branch Davidian siege in Waco and US president George W Bush's home town of Crawford. |
| He became widely known for The Battle of Orgreave (2001), a reconstruction of the clash between miners and police at Orgreave, near Rotherham, England, during the miners' strike 1984–85. He described it as a ‘piece of living history’, comprising a film, book, and recording. His works also include orchestrated events, such as A Social Parade (2004), which involved a diverse cross-section of citizens of San Sebastian, Spain, walking down the central boulevard; photographs, including a series exploring the political and culture heritage of Britain by commissioning various memorials to modern people and events around the country; and various print publications. |
| He was born in London, England. After studying art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, specializing in Baroque art and architecture, he received a master's degree in art history at Sussex University in 1992. |
