Dello Joio, Norman (1913–2008)

US composer. His works combine the influences of jazz, Italian opera, and the Catholic Church, and include three operas based on the story of Joan of Arc.

He studied at the Juilliard Graduate School in New York with Bernard Wagenaar, and later with Paul Hindemith at Yale School of Music. He was professor of music at Boston University 1972–79.

Stage

operas The Ruby (1953), The Triumph of St Joan (1959), and Blood Moon (1961); symphonic ballet On Stage! (1946); ballet suite Duke of Sacramento (1942).

Orchestral

sinfonietta (1940), symphonic movement Silvermine for orchestra, Colonial Variations for orchestra (1976), concertos for piano, two pianos, harp, and flute; Variations on a Bach Chorale for orchestra (1985).

Vocal

Western Star for solo voices, narrator, chorus, and orchestra; Mass (1976).

Chamber

quartet and trio for woodwind, trio for flute, cello, and piano; violin and piano sonata, Duo concertante for cello and piano, sonatina for cello solo; suite and Duo concertante for two pianos; two sonatas, suite and two preludes for piano.
