Dellums, Ronald Vernie (1935– )

US representative. In Congress, he championed civil liberties and opposed military aggression while serving on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees. As a black American, he was often a harsh critic of the white power establishment.

Born in Oakland, California, heinitially served as a marine. He became a social worker before going into politics as a Democrat for California in 1972.
