Delmonico, Lorenzo (1813–1881)

Swiss-born US restaurateur. He opened a number of successful restaurants that introduced European standards to New Yorkers, offering fresh foods, a large menu, and long hours, innovations that were widely copied.

He was born in Marengo, Switzerland and went to New York in 1832. The kind of restaurant culture that flourishes in many US cities is based on Delmonico's.
