Delpy, Julie (1969– )

French actor. One of the most popular French actresses of her generation, she has appeared in a range of both French and US films, from small independents to major Hollywood productions. Known for her intense performances and delicate beauty, she achieved international recognition for her portrayal of a young Nazi supporter in Europa, Europa (1991). She went on to star opposite Ethan Hawke in Richard Linklater's romantic dramas Before Sunrise (1995) and its sequel Before Sunset, which she co-wrote (2004).

Her film debut was in Jean-Luc Godard's Détective (1985). Other films include La Passion Béatrice (1987), The Three Musketeers (1993), Killing Zoe (1994), Trois Couleurs: Blanc/Three Colours: White (1994), LA Without a Map (1998), and But I'm a Cheerleader (1999). She also had a recurring guest role on the popular medical drama ER (2001).

She was born in Paris, France, the daughter of actors Albert Delpy and Marie Pillet. After moving to the USA in 1990, she graduated from New York University's film school. She wrote, directed, and starred in the short film Blah Blah Blah (1995), which aired at the Sundance Film Festival. She has also had some success as a recording artist. Her self-titled album, released in 2003, contains the singles ‘A Waltz for a Night’ and ‘An Ocean Apart’, both of which featured on the Before Sunset soundtrack.
