Delsarte, Alexandre

    0.01 sec.

Delsarte, (François) Alexandre (Nicolas Chéri) (1811–1871)

French music teacher and theoretician. Teaching at the Paris Conservatoire, he devised a system of body movements designed to develop coordination, grace, and expressiveness, which greatly inspired the pioneers of modern dance, such as Emile Jaques-Dalcroze and Ted Shawn (see Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts).

He divided the movements of the human body into three categories: eccentric, concentric, and normal; and the expressions into three zones: head, torso, and limbs.
