Delta Plan

Sea-defence and land-reclamation project carried out in Zeeland in the southwestern Netherlands, and completed 1986. It was designed to control tidal flow in the deltas of the rivers Maas (see Meuse) and Rijn (see Rhine). The plan was conceived after the region suffered catastrophic flooding in 1953.

The Delta Plan, devised by the Dutch engineer Johan van Veen, entailed barrages being built across many of the estuaries and inlets of the delta, with a second line of defences at the eastern end of the freshwater lakes thus created. The new dams were also designed to carry road traffic, thus greatly improving communications to Zeeland and South Holland. The work took over 30 years.
