Deming

Town and administrative headquarters of Luna County, southwest New Mexico; population (2000) 14,100. It is located 96 km/60 mi west of Las Cruces. An underground section of the Mimbres River irrigates surrounding farms and ranches producing livestock, grain, poultry, fruit, beans, and cotton. A railway junction and trading centre, the town has drawn retirees in recent years. Mining was formerly central to the area's economy.
