demo

In computing, preview version of software that allows users to try out the main features of a particular program before buying it. Especially common among shareware producers, demo software usually blocks some features of the full version, so that a demo database might be able to handle only a small number of records.

The word ‘demo’ is also used to refer to fancy graphics and sound routines which are created by young programmers to demonstrate their skills to friends, admirers, and potential employers such as computer game publishers.
