Libretto by Pietro Metastasio; also an opera by Antonio Caldara, first produced on 4 November 1733. There are further settings by Christoph Willibald von Gluck (1743), Niccolò Jommelli (1743, the first of four), Karl Graun (1746), and Johann Hasse (1748). In the story, King Demophoön wants to sacrifice a virgin to appease Apollo, but the intended victim (Dirce) is secretly married to his son, Timanthes.
