Demopolis

Town in Marengo County, west-central Alabama; population (2000) 7,500. It is located at the confluence of the Tombigbee and Black Warrior rivers, to the south of Lake Demopolis. Noted for its antebellum mansions, dating to its heyday as a river port, it is today a centre for the distribution and processing of beef cattle, dairy products, soybeans, and lumber. Manufactures include paperboard, pulp, cement, and chemicals. Napoleonic exiles founded the city in 1817, attempting unsuccessfully to grow olives and grapes in the region.
