Dempsey, Gregory (1931– )

Australian tenor. He sang in Australia before joining the Sadler's Wells Theatre Company, London, in 1962. He sang David in The Mastersingers in 1968, and Matej Brouček in the first production by a British company of Janáček's The Excursions of Mr Brouček. He appeared as Gregor in The Makropoulos Case on his US debut (at San Francisco in 1966) and as Steva in Jenůfa at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1972. Other roles included Mime, Peter Grimes, and Aeneas in Les Troyens. His last major role was Bob Boles in Peter Grimes, which he sang in Sydney in 1980.
