World heavyweight champion

1919-26

In a re-match against Tunney in 1927 (the ‘Battle of the Long Count’) Dempsey knocked out Tunney in the seventh round but failed to return to a neutral corner, and thereby obliged the referee to delay the start of the count. The extra seconds gave Tunney time to recover and he went on to beat Dempsey on points.
