Dempsey, Jack (William Harrison) (1895-1983)) US heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey in a fighting stance. US heavyweight boxing champion, nicknamed ‘the Manassa Mauler’. He beat Jess Willard in 1919 to win the title and held it until 1926, when he lost it to Gene Tunney. Career highlightsProfessional recordfights: 79; wins: 64 (49 within the distance); draws: 9; defeats: 6World heavyweight champion1919-26In a re-match against Tunney in 1927 (the ‘Battle of the Long Count’) Dempsey knocked out Tunney in the seventh round but failed to return to a neutral corner, and thereby obliged the referee to delay the start of the count. The extra seconds gave Tunney time to recover and he went on to beat Dempsey on points. |
