Dempsey, Miles Christopher (1896–1969)

British general. He commanded an infantry brigade in France 1939–40, then took command of an armoured division June 1941. In 1942 he was in command of XIII Corps in both Sicily and Italy. He returned to Britain 1944 and took command of the British 2nd Army for the D-day invasion, leading them through northwestern Europe to the final surrender. He then became commander-in-chief of Allied Forces in Southeast Asia, a post he held until the end of the war. KCB 1944.
