Dendermonde

Town in the Belgian province of East Flanders, 25 km/16 mi east of Ghent, strategically located near the confluence of the rivers Dender and Scheldt; population (2001 est) 43,400. Dendermonde has a 15th-century Gothic cathedral. A carnival is held in the town in May.

In 1667 the inhabitants of Dendermonde repulsed the forces of the French king Louis XIV – who was trying to annex the Spanish Netherlands – by opening the sluices and flooding the entire district. The Duke of Marlborough took the town in 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession.
