Dennis, Eugene

Dennis, Eugene (1905–1961)

US Communist Party leader. He attended a Communist Party school in Moscow and became general secretary and then chairman of the Communist Party of America. He was imprisoned under the Smith Act, which states it is unlawful to advocate the overthrow of any US government.

He was born in Seattle, Washington and joined the Communist Party in 1926. He was arrested for organizing lettuce workers in California's Imperial Valley. He was still chairman of the Party when he died.
