| Town and administrative headquarters of Denton County, northeast Texas; population (2000) 80,500. It is located 61 km/38 mi northwest of Dallas. Founded in the 1850s, it has been an agricultural trade centre, and its varied manufactures include plastics, processed food, clothing, brick, and business forms. It is best known as an educational centre; it is home to both the University of North Texas (1890) and Texas Woman's University (1901). The Denton State School (1960) for the retarded is one of a number of medical institutions. The town is also headquarters for a five-state Federal regional emergency centre. |
